well today was another day! xmas is nearly upon and the kids are asking can we write a letter to santa?

amazing how much xmas seems to take over kids minds, perhaps its the excitement of gifts, fun family time or the heaps of chocolate and sugary foods and drinks they will eat!

All the talk of christmas and kids happy and merry around me just made me think it was a great time to post, you dont often remember these happy memories but i thought it was something nice to share.

enjoy

What to expect

I'm going to post a few videos as I find them that are educational for people considering becoming teacher aides (i might even start recording some myself)

Here is a quick one about becoming a teachers aide, its American but has a bit of insight, shame about the lady speaking about it and obviously we only need to undertake a certificate III in Education Support or a Certificate IV in Education Support.

Before becoming a teachers aide i considered whether or not I wanted to get in to childcare, my oldest daughter had just started prep but my youngest was still in childcare 3 days a week.

I looked in to the courses and considered doing either a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, or doing a Certificate III in Education Support or a Certificate IV in Education Support. I looked around at many many colleges until I found the Australian College of Teacher Aides and Childcare www.actac.com.au. Instead of being a sales guy trying to sell me a course the trainers were lovely ladies who had worked as childcare centre managers or primary school teachers.

I immediately knew this was the college I wanted to train with, but then I had to decide what course I wanted to do!

I decided not to do childcare for a coupe of reasons, it would have meant committing to something that my youngest daughter only had another year or two at most, (she was 3), even a part-time job in childcare would not have given me the holidays off with my oldest daughter and that would have meant putting her in after school care and then there was the time off, it was a great way to justify to hubby that I could have school holidays off of work!! The extra money would have been nice but at least I managed to get back on top of the housework and got a bit more time for myself :).

Doing the education support certificate was a no brainer!

And we are off!

Becoming a teachers aide can be a rewarding experience, flexibility, time with children, and the ability to pick up and drop of the kids at work!

how can you beat that? well I guess not working at all could be pretty good, but then you would miss out on the fun experiences at school.

Through my experience as a teachers aide I have built relationships with all of my daughters peers, have made friendships with other parents and ensured a positive environment for my oldest daughter, and soon when my youngest starts prep I hope to be able to do the same again.

I started helping at school by simply reading the homework books with the kids in the mornings and realised that I enjoyed my time there so much that I wanted to make my time there a bit more permanent so I spoke to the school who recommended that I undertake some study :)

back to study I went, I enrolled with the Australian College of Teacher Aides and Childcare in a Teachers Aide Course and started off doing a Certificate III in Education Support, I studied online and found the material quite straightforward. I actually completed the first unit in the first weekend, They say you should allow 10 hours a week to complete the course in 12 months but I think that really it was more like 5 hours a week to complete the course in less than 6 months. They have a pretty cool facebook page which they update regularly Teacher Assistants Facebook.

The trainer was amazing, I didn't really need her input much for study as the course material was quite easy, but she gave really good feedback and more importantly was a great sounding board for helping with different scenarios at school (she was a primary teacher before training people in Certificate III and Certificate IV in Education Support / Teachers Aides.

Now i've completed my studies 'graduated' and got a job working in a school im looking forward to keeping up my blog with informative posts on my experiences!

Bye
